Espacio Salero 11 - Schedule jlyu and august 2026

04/07/2026 - 29/08/2026 Seen: 98 times

Since its opening on March 8, 2025, Espacio Salero 11 has hosted over 60 cultural events. Each Saturday features a different type of offering: poetry one week; novels or essays the next; exhibition openings across various artistic disciplines; and talks focused on the local area on others. They are committed to listening to and learning from long-time local residents—valuing traditional wisdom—as well as experts on various issues affecting the region.

This summer, in 2026, they are once again offering a diverse, high-quality program, made possible by the collaboration of many talented and knowledgeable individuals.

JULY 2026 PROGRAM

On Saturday, July 4, the documentary *La Mar de Ellas* (The Sea of Women) will be screened. Created by marine biologist Ana Fernández—a member of the University of Murcia’s "ThinkAzul" team—the film highlights the active role women play in the marine world. A discussion session featuring some of the women from the documentary will follow, held in collaboration with the "Planeta Azul" diving center.

The following Saturday, July 11, the venue invites us to explore the area stretching from the Sierra Minera (Cartagena–La Unión) to Cabo de Palos through a book presentation by Antonio Cortina. His work offers insight into the history that has so deeply shaped the reality of the region.

On Friday, July 17, at 8:30 PM, writer Antonio Garrido will present his latest book. *Espléndido naufragio* (Splendid Shipwreck) is an emotional journey into the author's childhood and adolescence, featuring reflections on life and death that shed light on the meaning behind the paradoxical title. He will be joined by two journalists—his son Carlos and Manuel Madrid—who are sure to lead an engaging conversation with the author. The following day, Saturday, July 18, will see the opening of a charity underwater photography exhibition by David Gálvez—a native of Toledo and a Cabo de Palos local at heart—who won the 2018 National Geographic H2 Seiko contest with his stunning photograph of a nudibranch.

The month of July concludes with a Poetry Slam Cartagena event on Saturday, July 25. It is a poetic competition in which ten poets per evening vie for the audience's favor. It offers a unique way to introduce poetry to people unaccustomed to hearing or reading it, and guarantees a great time.

AUGUST 2026 SCHEDULE

The first Saturday of August begins with Pablo Rodríguez Ros—an environmental scientist and PhD in Marine Sciences, and author of the books *Argonauta* and *El mar que muere* (The Dying Sea). On this occasion, he will screen David Attenborough’s striking documentary *Ocean* and subsequently discuss the challenges facing Mediterranean marine life and potential solutions.

On August 2nd, an exhibition by local artist Paloma Tobal will open. She works with resin to recreate the beach landscapes of our local paradise—spanning the area between Cabo de Palos and La Manga—creating works that leave a lasting impression.

On August 9th, Cartagena-born author Diego Sánchez Aguilar will present his latest book, *El mago David*. This novel, winner of the Mallorca Prize for Narrative in Spanish, reaffirms his ability to transform the everyday into a philosophical experience, cementing his status as one of the most versatile and profound voices in the contemporary literary landscape.

August 16th marks the opening of a group exhibition featuring local artists with strong ties to Cabo de Palos: Maria Jimenez, Piqui Templado, and Los Cuencos de Colla. Through oil painting, watercolor, and ceramics, they will offer us a glimpse into the area's hidden corners, landscapes, flora, and fauna.

On August 22nd, writer Alberto Chessa will present his latest poetry collection, *Parábola del barro* (Parable of Clay). His debut poetry collection, *La osamenta* (Rialp, 2011), earned him a runner-up award (Accésit) at the Adonáis Prize. Since then, he has published a series of titles, building a poetic body of work that now spans eight books. His literary contributions also include the translation of several volumes of fiction and poetry. August concludes with a talk on August 29th by Isabel Rubio—a lifelong environmental advocate, co-founder of *Pacto por el Mar Menor*, and creator of the blog "marmenormarmayor.es." An expert on local flora and fauna, she invites us to take a walk and focus on the plant life of the Marchamalo Saltworks. These plants are, as she puts it, "brave"—growing amidst the salt pans thanks to their high salt tolerance and drought resistance.
