CARTAGENA THINKS 10TH ANNIVERSARY: FERNANDO VALLADARES `CLIMATE CHANGE, OPPORTUNITY OR DISASTER´

It's clear to everyone that climate change has accelerated at a breakneck pace. Current events remind us daily of record-breaking wind speeds, drought intensity, rainfall volume, and increasingly devastating wildfires. It's also hardly surprising to recall that our addiction to oil and our socioeconomic model are behind this, as well as the cascade of wars, humanitarian crises, health emergencies, economic downturns, and environmental disasters that are tearing apart a civilization on the brink of collapse. Science can not only explain what's happening but also offer solutions and ideas to turn this situation into an opportunity to truly be healthy and happy.

Fernando Valladares is a researcher at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and a professor at Rey Juan Carlos University. He is a highly cited scientist for his research on biodiversity and the impacts of climate change (valladares.info). In 2021, he received the Jaume I Prize and the BBVA Foundation Environmental Communication Award. In 2023, he published the book *La recivilización* (Recycling), which compiles much of his thinking.
