CARTAGENA THINKS PHILOSOPHICAL CAFE: LAURA GARCÍA VICENTE 'WHY DO WE HIERARCHIZE OUR EMOTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS?'

The bonds of affection and love associated with friendship constitute a significant part of our lives. All those people we call friends accompany us from our earliest childhood. However, within the framework of Western culture, friendship has been relegated to a secondary role, always behind romantic love. Numerous literary and cultural representations have emphasized this secondary role of friendship within our emotional connections. During this philosophical discussion, we will reflect on the place we give to friends in our personal lives, as well as other affective constructs that exist outside the hierarchies under which we typically structure our relationships.
Laura García Vicente graduated in Philosophy from the University of Murcia in 2024. During the 2024/2025 academic year, she completed a Master's degree in Theory and Criticism of Culture at the Carlos III University of Madrid and simultaneously held a Research Fellowship. Furthermore, during the 2025/2026 academic year, she completed a Master's degree in Teacher Training at the University of Murcia. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Philosophy at the University of Murcia. Her research interests lie in the fields of cultural studies and the philosophy of culture.
