“I ask you to help me die.” He told me this without preamble, but it didn’t surprise me. In early 2022, my father, the political analyst and writer Carlos Alberto Montaner, entrusted me with the most difficult and painful mission of my life: he asked me to handle all the paperwork to apply for assisted dying in Spain.
This book is the family and emotional chronicle of that journey of no return—the father’s—and the author’s—against the backdrop of euthanasia. A path full of obstacles and uncertainty, but also an extraordinary journey through emotions, intimate communion, and perseverance in the face of adversity.
Gina Montaner (Havana, 1960) is a journalist and writer. For 40 years she has published in various newspapers in Latin America, the United States, and Spain, as well as on television. She has won more than eight Emmy Awards. She is the author of the novel La mala fama (Plaza y Janés, 2009), coordinated and wrote the prologue for Un día sin inmigrantes (Grijalbo, 2006), and in 2024 published Deséenme un buen viaje. Memorias de una despedida (Planeta). She graduated in Latin American Literature from Barnard College (New York). She currently lives in Madrid.
Loren Arseguet (Castelsarrasin, France, 1954) is president of the federal association Derecho a Morir Dignamente (DMD). She holds a degree in Hispanic Philology from the Sorbonne in Paris, resides in Madrid, and has been a member of the association for ten years. It has a strong commitment to the fight for the free disposal of one's own life, a human right yet to be conquered, and against the taboo of death.
