CARTAGENA THINKS: ANDREA GARCÍA-SANTESMASES `A NEW SEXUAL CONTRACT. PLEASURE AND POWER IN THE FEMALE DESIRE INDUSTRY`

Based on ethnographic and documentary research, this book analyzes the industry of female desire, specifically erotic services for women. It concludes that payment does not reverse gender roles: in these services, the man is the one who knows and decides, and therefore, neither fear nor desire changes sides. The analysis serves to reflect on the commodification of sexuality, heteropessimism, and the hegemony of postfeminist discourse. It ends by advocating for a new sexual contract, beyond consent, in which men and women can articulate their own desires.
Andrea García-Santesmases Fernández holds degrees in Sociology and in Social and Cultural Anthropology. She has a PhD in Sociology, and her doctoral thesis received the Extraordinary Doctoral Award. Currently, she is a professor in the Department of Social Work at the UNED (National University of Distance Education). She has extensive experience as a researcher, teacher, and activist in gender, body, and sexuality studies. She has numerous scholarly publications and popular science books. The first was The Desired Body: The Pending Conversation Between Feminism and Anableism (Kaótica libros, 2023) and the most recent A New Sexual Contract: Pleasure and Power in the Industry of Female Desire (Ariel, 2026).
