EXHIBITION: José Luis Dacosta Medeiros: "BORDERS". The Luzzy

A retrospective, curious, chromatic, and singular look as a way of observing simple episodes that mark and determine the life of the demiurge. “Homo sum, humani nihil a me alienum” proclaimed Augustine of Hippo, in that phrase adopted from Publius Terentius. And indeed, that could be said of the exhibition that dMedeiros brings us. “Nothing human is alien to him” in the diverse themes addressed in his paintings: beliefs, genetic endowment, irony, fear, the sign, or borders as a method of intellectual isolation.

This has nothing to do with being a prolific author, nor with adapting to fleeting trends. His creative style is epigenetic because it is based on an emotion, the triggering apex, that restlessly stirs the artist's mind, until it settles, stirs the conscience, and molds the concept. "Art has to be thought about more than seen," said the Ukrainian suprematist Kazimir Malevich, and this seems to be dMedeiros's mantra in his creative architecture. Events that shock, because without passion there is no art, that stir the conscience until they engender a sense of duty, to illuminate a purpose without being influenced by technical orthodoxy.

A labyrinthine journey, traversing inhospitable places, carrying the lightness of ideas like Sisyphean stones, that is worth visiting.
