Where does it take place?
The study of ceramic production is a fundamental tool for understanding the economic, social, and commercial transformations that took place in southeastern Iberia during Late Antiquity. Between the 4th and 6th centuries AD, this territory witnessed significant changes in production systems, consumption habits, and exchange networks, within a context of profound transformation of the Roman world.
This seminar proposes an approach to these processes based on the latest archaeological research, paying special attention to pottery centers, everyday ceramic productions and commercial distribution circuits in the western Mediterranean.
The event, presented by Sebastián Ramallo Asensio, will feature the participation of leading specialists. M.ª Carmen Berrocal Caparrós will discuss the study of the El Mojón pottery workshop, located in the Bay of Mazarrón, an important center of Late Roman ceramic production whose activity and Mediterranean influence contribute to understanding the economic dynamics of the territory of Carthago Spartaria.
For her part, Alicia Segura Gutiérrez will analyze the kitchen ceramics used in the southeastern Iberian Peninsula during the 4th and 5th centuries AD, providing new perspectives on domestic practices, eating habits and consumption patterns in this period.
Finally, Rafael Sabio González will present the research on the Ses Fontanelles shipwreck, located off the coast of Mallorca, an exceptional testament to maritime trade and the circulation of goods in the Roman Mediterranean. His presentation will also provide insight into the participation of the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology (ARQUA) in the archaeological research and intervention project at the shipwreck, as well as its future prospects.
The seminar is ultimately conceived as a space for meeting and scientific reflection on the value of ceramics as a source of knowledge of economic, commercial and cultural relations during Late Antiquity.
