TRINCABOTIJAS BAJA BATTERY

VIEW MAP

This fortification is located on Cala Cortina's southern tip, with an approximate height of 50m above sea level. It is a 17th century building, it is considered the oldest coastal battery in Cartagena. In 1641 the first coastal shooting test was carried out.

Reformed in the first half of the 18th century, when new coastal defence plans were designed, the construction of another nearby battery was proposed, but higher at 94 meters.

During the 19th century it was updated and equipped with two 30,5cms calibre Krupp steel cannons, with a range of 12,000m. The battery was unarmed at the end of the Spanish Civil War, and its parts were sent to Tarifa.

Much of the facilities and ground were given to the Navy for placing a Demagnetizing Station. Nowadays little is preserved of the original fortification.
