MAJOR ROYO BATTERY

VIEW MAP

This fortification is also known as Trincabotijas Alta. It is found as its namesake, located on Cala cortina's southern tip, at 94 meters high above sea level.

Nowadays, it only conserves 5 of the 6 barbettes it had. The current battery is a reformation of the one that already existed at the beginning of the 18th century, named Trincabotijas.

In 1911 its designation was changed, becoming MAJOR ROYO battery, to honour the gunner awarded for his behaviour in Melilla.

It could beat with its howitzers the entire harbour's mouth and Escombreras cove too. After Aguilones battery received its cannons in 1933, Major Royo battery lost much of its usefulness, although it kept its guns for several years.
