SANTA ELENA TOWER
Located 22Kms from Cartagena, at a height of 70m from which the cove of La Azohía is dominated.
This construction is hexagonal and with two bodies communicated by a tight spiral staircase.
The lowest room's entrance is through an access door facing East, raised above ground level about 4.50 meters, as is common in this type of building.
Its construction dates back, at least, to the late 16th century, under the reign of Philip II, with the purpose of giving shelter to the fishermen of La Azohía and serving as a watchtower that served to prevent the presence of pirates near the coast
You can access, starting at La Azohía through a military stone track, easily accessible by pedestrians.
In the first half of the 19th century, it was decommissioned for the coastal defence, and it was handed over to the Carabineros Corps. It is currently owned by the State Heritage. It is considered as Heritage of Cultural Interest.
