DAYS HERE WE JUST WANT TO BE HUMAN

LIGHTING UP WATCH TOWERS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

Fort Christmas Esplanade

Organized by: Amnesty International

The initial reason for this event was to give these unique architectural elements their function of visual communication for one day. In 2016, the initiative was launched to make it possible to connect the defence towers that surround the island of Mallorca. Given the humanitarian drama of the migration of so many people by sea, it was decided to completely change the original function of the signals, and imagine that the fire and smoke from the towers were beacons of welcome that showed the way to a safe harbour.

Activists from the Murcia and Cartagena Group of Amnesty International were the first to join from the Peninsula in January 2022 in the Torres Park in Cartagena, and in 2023 and 2024 with lighting flares and smoke in the Santa Teresa Tower in La Azohía.

On this day there will be countless “Ignition” points, both on the Spanish coast and in various autonomous communities inland, and in other places in Africa and France. At all points a manifesto will be read evoking the drama of the people who risk their lives crossing the Mediterranean, drawn up by Amnesty International Spain. In Cartagena it will be on the esplanade of the Fuerte de Navidad, at 12:00 with the lighting of smoke flares and at 18:00 with light flares.
