Synopsis:

Sweden, mid-14th century. The Black Death is ravaging Europe. After ten years of fruitless fighting in the Crusades, the Swedish knight Antonius Blovk and his loyal squire are returning from the Holy Land. Blovk is a tormented man full of doubts. On the way he meets Death, who claims him. He then proposes to play a game of chess, in the hope of obtaining from Her answers to the great questions of life: death and the existence of God.
