CARTAGENA THINKS: MANUEL ESPÍN `INSUMISAS. HISTORIA DE UNA SUCHA POR LA EQUALDA EN ESPAÑA´

The liberal revolutions beginning in 1789 and the ideals of 'liberty, equality, fraternity' were detrimental to women, who were subjected to a patriarchal system like that embodied by the Napoleonic Civil Code, resulting in a loss of rights compared to the Enlightenment. During the 19th century, a latent tension developed regarding the recognition of women's access to education (in Spain) and suffrage (in the world of the Industrial Revolution). In this latter period, the demand for these rights arose in parallel with the anti-slavery struggle. The book traces a complex path through Spain and the global context over more than two centuries. At the beginning of the 20th century, a clash emerged between the suffrage movement of bourgeois women and that of working-class women. The creation of the Residencia de Señoritas (Residence for Young Women) and the Lyceum Club Femenino (Women's Lyceum Club) served as a prelude to the female presence in the Generation of '27. In contrast to realities such as those faced by women under Nazism and Fascism, whose sole destiny was motherhood, the book presents equality as a human right. It is accompanied by a theatrical monologue about Zenobia Camprubi, more than just 'Juan Ramón Jiménez's wife' and a character mistreated from a psychological point of view.

Manuel Espin holds a PhD in Sociology and degrees in Law, Political Science, and Information Science. He has taught at universities, directed various programs on TVE (Spanish National Television), and acted in feature films.
