CARTAGENA THINKS: JOSÉ LUIS FERRIS `MARUJA MALLO. THE GREAT TRANSGRESSOR OF '27`
Maruja Mallo (1902-1995) was one of the most extraordinary painters of the Generation of '27 and the Spanish avant-garde. Excessive and outspoken, she was the most daring and transgressive artist of her time. She captivated Picasso and the French Surrealists. She was a protégé of the philosopher Ortega y Gasset and a companion of Neruda, Alberti, Miguel Hernández, and other unforgettable figures. After her exile, she returned to Spain in 1965 and embraced the young people of the Movida Madrileña. She disguised herself as herself and went out to conquer public spaces as an 80-year-old woman. She died on February 6, 1995, leaving in our memory the legacy of the most fascinating artist of our avant-garde movements.
José Luis Ferris holds a doctorate in Spanish Literature and is a tenured university professor. His published works include the poetry collections Cetro de cal (runner-up for the Adonais Prize 1984), Niebla firme (1989), and El animal que habito (2022).
