CARTAGENA THINKS: THE CRITICAL MASS `THE BICYCLE IN THE HISTORY OF FEMINISM`

At the end of the 19th century, riding a bicycle allowed women to move about without male supervision, challenging social and dress norms. We invite you to listen to the podcast "Bicycle Stories" by Lola Buendía.
In episode 1, she recounts the adventure of Annie Londonderry, the first woman to cycle around the world, demonstrating autonomy and courage in an era that restricted women's mobility and social roles. In episode 8, she describes how the suffragist movement incorporated the bicycle as a symbol of freedom and equality.
Frances Willard and Alice Hawkins used cycling to highlight their fight for women's right to vote, education, and freedoms, showing that something as everyday as riding a bike could defy expectations and generate social change.
F. Willard, an American suffragist leader, learned to ride a bicycle at age 53 and recounted it in her book "How I Learned to Ride the Bicycle" (1895); her narrative serves as a metaphor for female emancipation.

WHO PARTICIPATES and WHY PARTICIPATE?
Anyone who can ride a bike or skates is welcome. Children accompanied by an adult, teenagers, and seniors are all welcome.
“Look up, and far, and always, and out.”
F. Willard.
