Major figures from our country’s arts scene headline the new theatre season promoted by the City Council’s Department of Culture at the El Batel Auditorium. Actress Lola Herrera returns to the municipality on March 20 at 8:30 p.m. with Camino a la Meca, the production she stars in alongside Natalia Dicenta and Carlos Olalla. Tickets and further information are available at www.auditorioelbatel.es and at the auditorium box office (opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.).
The Road to Mecca, by Athol Fugard, is inspired by a real woman, Helen Martins, who rebelled against all the establishments of her time. A being who pursues desire, the light of inspiration that belongs to no age and no generation. Someone who prefers questions to certainties, who values her freedom and autonomy by standing up to her time and the world around her. “When I read it, I heard Lola Herrera’s voice beating through every line of the text. Without grandiloquence, the desire to live freely and intensely floats in the air,” explained Claudio Tolcachir, who is responsible for adapting Fugard’s play.
“Honoured and excited by this new project, which I believe will remain in the minds and hearts of those of us involved and of every audience member who joins us,” added Tolcachir, who is delighted to have Lola Herrera as the lead actress. She will perform in Cartagena on March 20 at 8:30 p.m.
In addition to Herrera, the new municipal theatre season at the El Batel Auditorium will feature major performers such as Lluís Homar and Paloma San Basilio, among others. Tickets are now on sale on the website www.auditorioelbatel.es and at the cultural venue’s box office.
