Major figures from our country’s arts scene headline the new theatre season promoted by the City Council’s Department of Culture at the El Batel Auditorium. Veteran actor Lluís Homar stars alongside Cara Mingueza in the production Memoirs of Hadrian on May 23 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets and further information are available at www.auditorioelbatel.es and at the auditorium box office (Monday to Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.).
The novel Memoirs of Hadrian by Marguerite Yourcenar, translated by Julio Cortázar, is a literary work that immerses the audience in the history of culture and in the solitude of a great leader facing death. It is a first-person testimony of the life of the Roman emperor born in Hispania. “The extraordinary sequence of his achievements is conveyed on a scale that, over time, has weighed the importance of the meaning of life more than the pursuit of triumph and ambition,” explained playwright Brenda Escobedo, who adapted the work. The production is directed by Beatriz Jaén and will be performed on May 23 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are available at www.auditorioelbatel.es.
The play stars Lluís Homar, who began his theatre career in 1974 with the production Othello, and since then has participated in countless stage, film, and television projects. From 2019 to 2024, he directed the National Classical Theatre Company, where he oversaw productions such as El gran teatro del mundo, El templo vacío, La comedia de maravillas, Alma y palabra, Lo fingido verdadero, Adolfo Marsillach soy yo, and La discreta enamorada, and performed as an actor in El príncipe constante, Alma y palabra, Antonio y Cleopatra, Adolfo Marsillach soy yo, La discreta enamorada, and El templo vacío. His notable film roles include Bad Education (2004) and Broken Embraces (2009) by Pedro Almodóvar, Los Borgia by Antonio Hernández, and the sci-fi film EVA (2011) by Kike Maíllo.
In addition to Homar, the new municipal theatre season at the El Batel Auditorium has featured major performers such as Lola Herrera, José Sacristán, and Paloma San Basilio, among others. Tickets are now on sale at www.auditorioelbatel.es and at the cultural venue’s box office.
