MODERNIST CARTAGENA: 'CLANDESTINE' The forbidden party of the cuplé
CLANDESTINA is a forbidden party in La Bernalina, with the intention of recovering a musical and theatrical genre that emerged at the beginning of the 20th century: the low-class genre.
Saturday, April 25th at 8:30 pm at the Cartagena Casino. Free admission until capacity is reached.
The cuplé is the central theme of this piece, although it also has clear influences from musical revues and early 20th-century Spanish popular music. La Bernalina, an exquisite and risqué cuplé singer, along with Agapito "the butler" and his pianist Genaro, is famous for organizing lively clandestine parties to which she invites illustrious figures of her time, the Roaring Twenties.
The guests (the audience) participate in one of these clandestine parties, which are held in a different location each time to evade the authorities. At this outrageous party, the forbidden takes center stage, with vice, gambling, lewdness, and "indecent" songs all on offer. The event unfolds while evading the authorities, who try to prevent this hilarious gathering from being discovered and censored. La Bernalina performs her songs in constant interaction with the audience, who are a key part of the show. But during the party, the guests will encounter something unexpected, which will provide them with more than one surprise.
