The Cartagena Negra Short Film Festival has been included in the official list of national festivals for the Goya Awards. The short film competition, organized annually as part of the Cartagena Negra festival, has been selected for the official list of national short film festivals for the 41st Goya Awards.
From now on, the winner of the Cartagena Negra Best Short Film Award will automatically qualify for direct entry into the Goya Awards. Similarly, the finalist short films will receive one of the seven selections required to be submitted for the Spanish film awards.
The Cartagena Negra Short Film Award celebrates its tenth edition this year, solidifying its position as a leading festival, not only in the literary field but also in cinema. Cartagena Negra has always championed film, especially short films, with a clear mission: to recognize that short films are indeed cinema.
As of June 1st, a record 252 short films had been received . The result of many years of work, the Cartagena Negra Short Film Award has officially become a qualifying festival for the Goya Awards in the Best Fiction Short Film category.
According to the rules of the Goya Awards, published on June 9, 2026, any short film that wants to be eligible for the Best Fiction Short Film category at the 2027 Goya Awards must win at one of the qualifying festivals listed in the official document.
Similarly, short films selected for the Official Section at at least 7 of the qualifying festivals, which can be found in the list in Annex V of the rules, will also be eligible for this category. Therefore, the finalists of the Cartagena Negra Short Film Award will receive an official selection that counts towards submission for next year's Goya Awards.
Cristóbal Terrer has been the coordinator of the Cartagena Negra Short Film Award since 2024, and is the director and founder of the film and television website Seriemaniac.com. On behalf of the entire Cartagena Negra organization, he enthusiastically celebrated this news, which positions the festival as one of the leading short film events in Spain. Starting with this edition, the winner and finalists will receive official qualification for the Goya Awards, a way of recognizing the talent showcased at each edition.
