Defensive Architecture

CONCEPCIÓN CASTLE

VIEW MAP

The aim of the castle was to guard and defend the city and the bay.
Archaeological studies show that the Torre del Homenaje was part of a single construction plan dating from the late 13th century, which would include the fortresses of Lorca, Aledo, Moratalla and Cartagena.
In its construction, materials of Roman origin were reused, highlighting a white marble tombstone dedicated to Lucio Emilio Recto, arranged as lintel of the access door to the tower. In the 14th century a reconstruction took place in which great ashlars of the Roman amphitheatre were used.
Over the centuries and the evolution of defence and attack techniques, this medieval fortification lost its strategic value. In 1981 works were carried out to complete both the interior and exterior appearance of the medieval tower. In the late 90s, the castle began to be used as a tourist-cultural resource; in the year 2001 it is put in value as museum as Centre of Interpretation of the City.
It is included within Concepción Hill, which includes three sectors declared "Historical Monuments":

  • Concepción Castle.
  • 16th-17th Lantern Tower.
  • Antonelli Gates.
